Two days after nine were gunned down in a Uttar Pradesh village over land dispute, chief minister Yogi Adityanath has said that 29 accused have already been arrested, reports ANI.

“Twenty nine criminals have been arrested till now, a single barrel gun, 3 double barrel guns and a rifle have been seized. Whoever is found responsible for this incident, strictest action will be taken against them,” said Yogi.

On Wednesday (17 July), nine persons, including three women, were gunned down by a village head and his accomplices in Murtiya village under the Ghorawal police station in Sonbhadra district.

ADG Law and Order P V Ramasastry said that the village head Yagya Dutt Bhurtia reached the village to take possession of 90 bighas of farmland he had purchased two years ago.

Bhurtia along with other men on tractors started using the machines to plough the land claimed by him. However, the villagers who had stopped him taking the land for two years gathered there and protested. Following this, his men opened fire.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on her way to meet victims was detained in Narayanpur by UP Police as Section 144 is under operation.
