One of Uttar Pradesh (UP)'s most wanted and dreaded gangsters, the 32-years-old kingpin of Mirchi Gang identified as Ashu Jaat and Ashish Singh, was arrested in Mumbai yesterday (5 September) by a joint team of UP's Hapur Police and Mumbai Police, reports Times of India.

Jaat carried a bounty of Rs 2.5 lakh on him, with a list of 51 cases of murder, kidnapping, loot and theft against his name.

He was also wanted in the murders of Noida executive Gaurav Chandel and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s Hapur leader Rakesh Sharma.

Hapur Police had already arrested Jaat's wife Poonam and other gang members.

According to UP police, Jaat feared that he would be killed in an encounter by the Special Task Force (STF) and thus fled to Mumbai, took a rented room in Vile Parle and changed his appearance by growing a beard.

At the time of his arrest, the gangster was caught selling fruits in Mumbai.

UP Police learned about Jaat's presence in Mumbai after the latter made the mistake of calling an associate in the state. Following this, UP Police last week shared the information with Mumbai Police.

It should be noted that the gangster was wanted by not just the Hapur police, but also by law enforcement authorities in Ghaziabad and Noida.
