The United States on Tuesday (8 October) imposed visa restrictions on Chinese government and Communist party officials who it says are responsible for the brutal persecution of ethnic minorities in the Xinjiang province of China.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, in a statement on Tuesday (8 October), announced “Visa restrictions on Chinese government and Communist Party officials who are believed to be responsible for, or complicit in, the detention or abuse of Uighurs, Kazakhs, or other members of Muslim minority groups in Xinjiang, China,”

Besides, the family members of the Chinese officials responsible for the repression in Xijiang could also be subjected to the visa restrictions.

Pompeo also asked China to end its campaign of repression in Xinjiang province and release those people whom it had detained.

“The United States calls on the People’s Republic of China to immediately end its campaign of repression in Xinjiang, release all those arbitrarily detained, and cease efforts to coerce members of Chinese Muslim minority groups residing abroad to return to China to face an uncertain fate,” said the statement.
