United States lawmaker Congressman Alex Mooney has said that America, which is the world's largest economy, owes India $216 billion in loan, reports Times of India.
The US national debt has skyrocketed to a record high of $27.9 trillion and a large part of it comes from Asian countries like Japan and China, he said.
Opposing President Joe Biden’s massive $2 trillion coronavirus relief package, the Republican Senator from West Virginia revealed that US owes $258 billion to Brazil and $216 billion to India as its national debt piles up.
"Brazil, we owe $258 billion. India, we owe $216 billion. And the list goes on the debt that is owed to foreign countries," Mooney said.

Mooney highlighted that America’s national debt had doubled during former President Barack Obama’s eight-year long tenure. He urged his colleagues to be judicious with the "dollars" and also claimed that most of the money from the proposed stimulus package would not be used for coronavirus relief.
Mooney said that USA owes more than $1 trillion to both China and Japan despite being in a global competition with Beijing.
“Today, as I stand here right now, we have USD 27.9 trillion in national debt...That is actually a little more than USD 84,000 of debt to every American citizen right here today. We have actually borrowed USD 10,000 per person in one year. I mean, that is out of control,” the Republican was quoted as saying in the report.
