The United States (US) government is denying appeals of a US-born woman to return back home from the refugee camp, where she lives with her small son in Syria, arguing that she is not an American citizen, reports Hindustan Times.

Hoda Muthana, a 20-year-old student at the University of Alabama-Birmingham in US informed her parents that she was going on a field trip to Atlanta but instead travelled to Syria to join ISIS.

She reportedly said that she regret having joined the Islamic State group, which she joined in 2014 after embracing extremist ideology while living with her family in Alabama.

“Anyone that believes in God believes that everyone deserves a second chance, no matter how harmful their sins were,” Muthana added.

As per reports the US government has repatriated several American women linked to the group, along with their children, but not Muthana who now fears for her life as she could be targeted by people at the camp who have not renounced IS.

According to the reports of Counter Extremism Project, Muthana actively took part in the IS activities and propaganda urging jihadists in America to “go on drive-bys, and spill all of their blood.” She was also prolific on social media, often calling for the murder of Americans. She also reportedly urged jihadis to “take down” President Barack Obama calling him a “treacherous tyrant.”

She got married to three IS terrorists, who all reportedly died during the conflict. Reportedly, she also hailed 2015 attack in the office of Charlie Hebdo in France.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo however has said that Muthana was never actually a US citizen and consequently US had no obligation to take her back.

President Donald Trump also tweeted that Muthana will not be let back into the US.

She said she is willing to face the US justice system if she is allowed to return.
