Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) despite not increasing bus fares since 2014, remains highest among other cities in India.

A study conducted by Bengaluru Bus Prayanikara Vedike (BBVP), an NGO that campaigns for better transportation services released a comparative study that indicates that Bengaluru has the highest bus fare for the first 5 kilometres among other cities in the country.

BMTC charges Rs 15 for the first 5 kilometres, followed by Mumbai’s BEST at Rs 14, New Delhi’s DTC and Pune’s PMPML at Rs 10, the report reads.

The cities where the fares are low is seen in Chandigarh (Rs 5), Chennai (Rs 8), Kolkata (Rs 8) and Ahmedabad (Rs 8). This is despite the states witnessing an increase in tariffs multiple times in the last few years, according to the Times of India.

The blame for the prices are translated onto the state government since it offers no support to BMTC, BBVP says.

A delegation from the NGO has met transport minister of Karnataka, DC Thammanna and submitted a memorandum demanding lower fares and better services. The transport ministry is even considering another hike in the coming days, increasing the fares to accommodate the rising diesel prices.
