A group of lawyers from Tamil Nadu has written to President Draupadi Murmu, asking her to return the collegium's recommendation to appoint Victoria Gowri as a judge of the Madras High Court.
They said that Gowri had 'regressive views' regarding religious minorities, love jihad and conversions. One of the comments mentioned in their letter was regarding her opposition to the performance of Bharatanatyam for Christian songs.
They added these comments had the potential to disturb communal harmony and they were surprised that the collegium had decided to recommend her name.
Further, they said that her views were available in the public domain in the form of publications in magazines owned by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and in videos on YouTube.
Gowri, hailing from Kanyakumari district, is an advocate with over 20 years of experience. She has been a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and has also served as an Additional Solicitor General of India.
