Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) Delhi MLA Manjinder Singh Sirsa on Thursday (15 November) assaulted one of the convicts in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case in Patiala House court premises, The New Indian Express has reported.

The convicts, Naresh Sherawat and Yashpal Singh, were being escorted by the police to the lock up on the premises where jail inmates from Tihar and other prison are kept when brought for hearings in the court.

Earlier, on Wednesday (14 November), additional sessions judge (ASJ) Ajay Pandey had held both of them guilty of killing Hardev Singh and Avtar Singh during 1984 riots in Mahipalpur area of South Delhi after which they were taken into police custody.

On Thursday (15 November), the court hearing the arguments on quantum of punishment reserved its order for 20 November.

As per the report, when the police brought convicts out of the courtroom, Sirsa, who was waiting along with his supporters outside the courtroom, barged into the police ring around the convicts and slapped Yashpal.

However, the police swung into action and separated the convicts from Sirsa and his supporters. After this, abuses were hurled on each other by both sides.

Additional police personnel were arranged and the convicts were taken to the lock up.

Thereafter, Sirsa, alleging abuse of Sikhs and threats to him by unknown persons, filed a complaint at Tilak Marg police station.

Sirsa later tweeted about the complaint that he filed against some “goon elements” present in the patiala house court.
