What’s In A Number Plate? Contempt Of Court And Jail For Violation, Say Milords; Transport Department To Comply 

A crackdown on vehicles that do not carry high-security number plates will commence soon in the national capital. The transport department will carry out public awareness programmes to ensure people are informed about the decision and have plentiful time in hand to replace their existing plates.

The deadline has been set for 13 October 2018, for all owners of cars and bikes. Nearly 40 lakh vehicles commute in Delhi with older licence plates. One can only get the new high-security plates after 2 October. There will be 13 centres in Delhi, where the services can be availed. Newspaper ads will be soon published with information about the same, The Indian Express reported.

In 2012, the Supreme Court told all the states and union territories to make high-security number plates mandatory by June 2015. If one fails to comply, one can face contempt charges from the court.

A new software is being developed to enable online payment of fees for the application. Based on the applications received, appointments will be given with date and time for the registered users to come and upgrade the plates.

The new plates are made of aluminium and reflective tapes. They are tamper-proof and come with self-destructive holograms as well as a laser-embedded permanent identification number (PIN).
