The world’s first ever thermal battery, manufactured by Bharat Energy Storage Technology Private Limited (BEST), is set to be unveiled by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister (CM) Chandrababu Naidu tomorrow (6 August), Financial Express has reported.
BEST’s High Energy Density Storage (HEDS) batteries are an alternative to the Lithium-ion batteries (Li-ion) that are the norm in most applications today. The Li-ion batteries however have limited recharge cycles apart from requiring metals like Cobalt which need to be imported from other countries.
The new HEDS batteries however, promise to be 100 per cent environment friendly while using 95 per cent re-usable materials and consisting of no inflammable and hard metals. It is also priced in the same range as Li-ion batteries. The technology for the battery was patented by Dr Patrick Glynn in 2016 in India.
The batteries are also reportedly suited for grid stabilisations and balancing, thus being significant for usage in the renewable energy field. BEST plans to setup a Rs 660 crore greenfield project in the state with the potential to create nearly 3,000 jobs in the next three years. Also the company is planning to produce batteries for electric buses that can power the vehicle for 800 kms on a single charge, in collaboration with Bilwa motors.
