Yamuna Expressway Bus Accident: 29 Dead, Many Injured As Bus Falls Through Gap Between Flyovers

In a deadly road accident on Yamuna Expressway, 29 people lost their lives and several others got severely injured when an Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) bus fell through the gap between two flyovers, reports The Hindu.

The bus carrying over 50 passengers plunged 40 ft down before hitting the ground. The bus going from Lucknow to Delhi hit the railing and fell down at 5 am today, confirmed Babloo Kumar, Senior Superintendent of Police (Agra).

Even as Uttar Pradesh (UP) chief minister has announced a probe into the matter, preliminary inquiry has revealed that the driver fell asleep and lost control of the bus. A committee comprising the Transport Commissioner, the Divisional Commisioner and IG, Agra, to investigate into the bus accident and submit a report in 24 hours on its cause, among other things.

The UP government has also announced Rs 5 lakh ex gratia to the kin of the deceased. Police teams and disaster relief teams reached the site immediately. Among others, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, President Ram Nath Kovind offered condolences to the families of accident-victims.
