Yogi Government To Commission 1.5 Giga Watt Solar Projects By 2020; Aims For 10 GW In Renewables By 2022

In an effort to boost the share of renewable energy in the total energy mix of the state, the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government is planning to commission 1,500 megawatt (MW) capacity solar power plants by next year, reports Hindu Businessline.

State Minister for department of Additional Sources of Energy Brajesh Pathak on Wednesday (26 June) said that tenders for solar power plants with the capacity of 1,500 MW power generation have been done and they will commissioned by next year.

The minister said that the state government has set a target of producing 10,700 MW renewable energy by 2022.

“We are confident...of meeting our target in time. We aim to generate 4300 MW through rooftop solar installations. At present, solar power plants (totalling) 150 MW are running successfully,” Pathak said.

Emphasising on the UP government's Solar Energy Policy 2017, Pathak said that there is immense investment potential in the state and invited investors to invest in the state's renewable energy sector.

The policy aims to encourage participation of private sector and provide investment opportunities to set up solar power projects in the state.

“Another objective of the policy is to promote research and development, innovations and skill development in the state and achieve the target of 8 per cent solar renewable purchase obligation (Solar RPO) by 2022,” he added.

The UP government had also organised an investor summit in February 2018 to attract investments in the state. During the summit, state government had signed 46 memorandums of understanding (MoUs) worth over Rs 65,000 crore for renewable power generation alone.
