Minister of State for Human Resource Development (HRD), Satyapal Singh has announced that the expenses incurred on books, uniform and transport for disabled students would be reimbursed by the government across all schools in the country, The New Indian Express has reported.

He was speaking at the Helen Keller Awards ceremony organised by National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP) and Mindtree.

The minister said that specially-challenged people do not need compassion or courtesy but require real empowerment through education. He highlighted that just one per cent of all disabled children go to school adding that a minimum 5 per cent admission of children with disabilities would be ensured from this academic session.

He further said that ensuring the rights of disabled people was a priority for the government while reiterating his commitment to ensuring accessibility in institutes of higher education.
