Your Wait To Board Electric Buses In Bengaluru Might Not End Any Time Soon

Your wait to get into an electric bus in Bengaluru might not anytime soon for want of the required clearances from the Karnataka government, reports The Economic Times. The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) had initially planned to launch services in October this year.

The proposal which was sent to the state government is yet to receive clearance from Transport Minister D C Thammanna who is reportedly studying the pros and cons of the proposal.

BMTC had given a letter of intent (LoI) to Hyderabad-based Goldstone to operate 80 electric buses for six months in February this year. The project was on hold following the imposition of the Model Code of Conduct prior to the assembly elections.

Bengaluru was among the 11 cities selected by the Centre to receive 40 to 60 per cent subsidy under the FAME scheme for electric vehicles in public transport.

BMTC had earlier operated an electric bus manufactured by China-based BYD in 2014 on a trial basis.

Other cities including Mumbai have gone ahead in procuring electric buses and also opening up depots as charging spaces for private vehicle owners.
