Supreme Court Dismisses Petitions Seeking Legal Recognition For Same-Sex Marriage, Leaves Decision To Parliament

The Supreme Court on Tuesday (17 October) dismissed a batch of petitions seeking legal recognition for the same-sex marriages.

The CJI D Y Chandrachud led five-judge Constitution bench held that law does not recognise right to marry or have civil union for same sex couples and left it to the Parliament to make law for it.

In the final judgment, Supreme Court recorded the statement of the Union that it will constitute a Committee to examine the rights and benefits which can be given to queer couples.

Further, the apex Court also held that there was no right for queer couples to jointly adopt a child.
