After Death Of Ebrahim Raisi In Helicopter Crash, Iran To Hold Presidential Elections On 28 June

The Iranian government has announced that the country's 14th presidential election will take place on 28 June.

This decision was made during a meeting attended by Iran's First Vice-President Mohammad Mokhber, Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, Vice-President for Legal Affairs Mohammad Dehqan, and representatives from the Iranian Constitutional Council and Interior Ministry, according to media reports on Monday (20 May).

The announcement came after it was confirmed that Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and some members of his team, including Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, died in a helicopter crash.

The crash occurred near Varzaqan County, around 670 kilometers from Tehran, amid bad weather on Sunday (19 May).

Article 131 of Iran's Constitution states that if the President is unable to perform duties, the First Vice-President will assume the role of interim President.

The interim President is required to hold a new presidential election within a maximum of 50 days, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

During the meeting, the participants outlined the election processes, which include forming executive delegations, registering candidates, and launching electoral campaigns, according to IRNA.

The candidate registration period is set for 30 May to 3 June, with electoral campaigns running from 12 to 27 June.

The Constitutional Council has reportedly given initial approval to this schedule.
