After creating 1.5 lakh direct jobs in approximately two and a half years, the Apple ecosystem is now focusing on providing residential facilities to factory employees, following the models of industrial housing seen in China and Vietnam.
According to a report from The Economic Times, Apple's contract manufacturers and suppliers, including Foxconn, Tata and Salcomp, are planning to build homes for their employees.
This initiative is part of a public-private partnership scheme, marking the largest such private sector endeavour. Over 78,000 units are slated to be constructed under this scheme, with Tamil Nadu set to receive the highest number of units, approximately 58,000.
Most of the housing units are being constructed by the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT), with the Tata Group and SPR India also participating in building homes.
Under the scheme, the central government will provide 10-15 per cent of the funding, while the remainder will come from state governments and entrepreneurs. Construction and handover to the private sector are expected to be completed in the current fiscal year ending 31 March 2025.
The aim of this massive employee housing initiative is to enhance efficiency and provide security, particularly to migrant women employees, a majority of whom are aged between 19-24 years.
This is especially significant as most employees currently stay in rented locations and endure long bus journeys to reach the factories, which can lead to security concerns.
