Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced his ministry's decision to create new districts in the Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh on Monday (26 August).
The newly formed districts are Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra and Changthang and have been formed "in pursuit of" Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision.
Emphasising a developed and prosperous Ladakh, Shah said that the new districts will take the benefits meant for the people to their doorsteps by bolstering governance in every nook and cranny.
"The Modi government is committed to creating abundant opportunities for the people of Ladakh," the Home Minister said in a post on X.
Earlier, Ladakh had only two districts, Leh and Kargil. It was made a UT on 5 August 2019 after separation from Jammu and Kashmir, which also became a UT.
