Assam: BJP Clinches Landslide Victory In North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council Elections, Bagging 25 Out Of 28 Seats

In a decisive victory, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has emerged triumphant in the 13th North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) elections, securing a staggering 25 out of 28 seats.

The NCHAC, comprising 30 members, witnessed the BJP winning six seats unopposed before the elections, with voting taking place on 8 January for the remaining 22 seats.

As reported by Hindustan Times, the remaining three seats were claimed by independent candidates, with two being former BJP rebels.

Meanwhile, Congress, Trinamool Congress (TMC), Aam Admi Party (AAP), and BJP's ally in the Assam assembly, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), faced defeats, failing to secure any seats in the autonomous council election.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma played a significant role in the BJP's campaign, promising skill development training for surrendered insurgents.

TMC leader Sushmita Dev, despite the party's failure to secure seats, expressed optimism, stating that they received a significant number of votes, marking a new beginning for the party's engagement in the NC Hills Autonomous Council.

“We are looking at this positively. We have received a good number of votes and we’ll continue to fight for the people of the NC Hills Autonomous Council in the years to come,” she said.

It's also noteworthy that the election, marked by a voter turnout of 85.78 per cent, unfolded peacefully across 231 polling stations in 22 constituencies in the Dima Hasao district.
