As the family of the Ayodhya rape victim has decided to terminate the pregnancy of the 12-year-old, the Uttar Pradesh Police now plans to make its case strong by conducting a DNA test of the foetus.
Notably, the accused Moeed Khan is a Samajwadi Party (SP) leader and an aide of the party's Faizabad MP Awadhesh Prasad. Instead of taking action against him, the party has demanded a DNA test.
SP national president and Kannauj MP Akhilesh Yadav said, "In the rape case, justice should be done by doing DNA tests of those who are accused, and not by merely making allegations and doing politics."
The victim, who is 12 weeks pregnant, is receiving medical care at a hospital in Lucknow. The medical team is expected to consider terminating the pregnancy after evaluating the victim’s medical report.
"The girl’s family has given its consent, and now the doctors overseeing her care will decide the next steps for the abortion," Sanjay Jain, Chief Medical Officer of Ayodhya told Indian Express.
On July 29, the police registered a rape case after doctors confirmed that the girl, who had reported stomach pain, was pregnant. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is personally reviewing the probe.
Last Friday, the victim’s mother met the CM, who promised full support and stated that the accused’s properties would be investigated. Bikapur MLA Amit Singh Chauhan was also present at the meeting.
After the meeting, Adityanath directed officials to arrange special provisions for the girl’s health and safety. The bakery of the accused was also demolished by Ayodhya authorities over encroachment charges.
