In a special gesture, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was present at the Dhaka airport on Friday (26 March) to welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Bangladesh.

PM Modi is on a two day visit to Bangladesh to participate in the National Day celebrations, which will also commemorate the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

On Friday, PM Modi paid tributes at the National Martyr’s Memorial in Savar and planted an Arjuna Tree sapling as a mark of respect for the freedom fighters of Bangladesh.

“I am happy that my first foreign visit after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic will be to our friendly neighbouring country, with which India shares deep cultural, linguistic and people-to-people ties,” PM Modi said in a statement.

The Prime Minister will also offer prayers to Goddess Kali at the ancient Jashoreshwari Kali Temple, one of the 51 Shakti Peethas in the Puranic tradition.

In this visit, he will also interact with representatives of the Matua community at Orakandi, from where Sri Harichandra Thakur disseminated his pious message.

Bangladesh is celebrating its 50 years of Independence from Pakistan on 26 March. Invitations for the same had also been extended to Sri Lanka, Nepal, Maldives, and Bhutan, but PM Modi will be the only leader to join the celebrations in-person.
