Biden To Send Top Security Adviser To India As PM Modi Set To Begin Third Term: What's On The Agenda

US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan is scheduled to visit India to engage with the new government in New Delhi on shared US-India priorities as Narendra Modi prepares to take the oath as Prime Minister of India for a record third straight term, according to the White House.

Sullivan's visit was discussed during a call between US President Joe Biden and Narendra Modi on Wednesday.

"President Joseph R. Biden Jr. spoke today with Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India to congratulate him and the National Democratic Alliance on their historic victory in India's general election," the White House said in a readout of the call.

Biden also praised the Indian citizens for participating in the elections, noting that around 650 million people cast their votes, the readout added.

The two leaders emphasised their commitment to deepening the US-India Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership and to advancing their shared vision of a free, open and prosperous Indo-Pacific region, the White House readout said.

"The two leaders also discussed National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan’s upcoming travel to New Delhi to engage the new government on shared U.S.-India priorities, including the trusted, strategic technology partnership," it added.

While Jake Sullivan's visit has been announced, his travel dates to India have not yet been shared.

However, it is expected to be within days of PM Narendra Modi's historic swearing-in, which is likely to take place on Saturday (8 June).

PM Modi is the only non-Congress prime minister in the history of India to take the oath of the office for a straight third term.

In addition to Biden, Senator Ben Cardin, Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, congratulated the Indian people for conducting the elections and casting over 650 million votes across the nation over the course of only a few weeks.
