Amid the ongoing water crisis in Delhi, the Supreme Court has directed the Himachal Pradesh government to release excess water, with prior notification to Haryana.
The court has instructed the Upper Yamuna River Board to monitor the water released by Himachal Pradesh.
The Haryana government has been asked by the top court to facilitate the flow of water released by Himachal to Delhi.
Additionally, the Delhi government has been asked to ensure that there is no wastage of water.
“Since Himachal has no objection, we direct that it shall transfer 127 cusecs from upstream so water reaches Hathnikund barrage and reaches Delhi through Wazirabad. As and when the surplus water is released by State of Himachal Pradesh with prior intimation, the State of Haryana shall facilitate the flow of water from Hathnikund to Wazirabad so it reaches Delhi without obstruction so the residents get drinking water,” the court’s order read, Indian Express reported.
The apex court's order comes as Delhi is grappling with water crisis as well as heatwave.
The Delhi government had sought the Supreme Court's immediate intervention to address the pressing issue.
