Former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition (LoP) Jairam Thakur has claimed that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Harsh Mahajan has won the Rajya Sabha election.

"There was no possibility of our victory. Despite having such a huge majority, Congress lost the Rajya Sabha seat...I congratulate Harsh Mahajan once again," Thakur said amid chants of 'Jai Shri Ram'.

"We are rightly saying that looking at this victory, the Himachal Pradesh CM should resign from his position...The MLAs have left him just within a year," he added.

Congress candidate was Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who lost after cross-voting by a few MLAs. Reportedly, these MLAs were not happy with CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu's leadership.

Singhvi targeted the BJP for his loss and said, "When a 25-member party fields a candidate against a 43-member party, there is just one message -- we will shamelessly do that which is not permitted by the law..."

Sukhu had alleged that opposition leaders were threatening the polling officers the counting was halted. He also claimed that CRPF and Haryana Police convoy took away five-six MLAs.

However, ANI reported that Himachal Pradesh MLAs, who had arrived in Panchkula from Shimla, are going back to their state.
