The Bengaluru Police on Wednesday (8 May) issued summons to BJP President J P Nadda and the party's IT cell head, Amit Malviya, in connection with a social media post that allegedly depicted the Congress party appeasing Muslims at the expense of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes.

The summons, served on Wednesday, sought their appearance at Bengaluru’s High Grounds Police Station within seven days for an investigation.

“For the purpose of investigation of the said case, you are hereby directed to appear before the undersigned investigation officer at 11 am at High grounds police station within seven days of receipt of this notice,” the summons read, Indian Express reported.

Additionally, the police had earlier asked the social media platform X to remove the contentious animated video posted by the BJP state unit, following a directive from the Election Commission (EC).

This action was in response to a complaint filed by the Karnataka Congress with the EC last Sunday.

A case has been registered against Nadda, Malviya, and BJP state president B Y Vijayendra at the High Grounds police station under section 125 of the Representation of People Act and section 505(2) of the Indian Penal Code.

The post, according to the EC sources cited in the Indian Express report, was a violation of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, which defines “corrupt practices” to include promotion of enmity between communities, castes and races.
