Competitive Appeasement: AIADMK General Secretary Palaniswami Comes Out In Opposition To CAA

A day after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin stated that he will not allow "Citizenship (Amendment) Act to set foot in Tamil Nadu", Edappadi K Palaniswami, the general secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), has said that his party would staunchly oppose any repercussions of the CAA on minorities.

However, it is noteworthy that AIADMK members had previously voted in favour of the CAA bill in Parliament.

In light of the recent controversy, Palaniswami took to social media to express the party's commitment to safeguarding the interests of minorities in the context of the CAA.

He accused the rival Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) of betraying the Muslim community during the Coimbatore riots by remaining silent spectators.

Palaniswami emphasised that the AIADMK, in contrast, would not permit the CAA to adversely affect minorities.

The AIADMK leader went on to criticise the DMK for its past support of the National Investigation Agency Act and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, both of which, according to him, have implications for minorities.

Palaniswami accused the DMK of adopting a contradictory stance by opposing the Bharatiya Janata Party on these issues through mere political statements and rhetoric.
