The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has been awarded the contract to build Bahrain Metro's Phase-1 Project. The project entails the construction of an approximately 30-km network with 20 stations.
In view of this, the Delhi Metro signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with BEML Limited on 20 February.
As a part of this MoU, the BEML will be responsible for manufacturing and supplying of Rolling Stock and the Delhi Metro will provide expertise in the fields of project development, budgeting and facilitating the development of contractual obligations for the Bahrain Metro Project, DMRC press release states. The agreement has been signed for $2 billion.
BEML Limited, formerly known as Bharat Earth Movers Limited, is a "Schedule A" Company under the Ministry of Defence, Government of India, and manufactures mining equipment, train coaches, and spare parts for industries such as defence, rail, electricity, and infrastructure.
BEML Limited is a significant manufacturer of domestic metro rolling stock in India, reports Mint.
The MOU was signed by Saleem Ahmed, Executive Director (Last Mile Connectivity), Delhi Metro and D S Ganesh, General Manager (Marketing), BEML in the presence of Vikas Kumar, Managing Director, Delhi Metro and Amit Banerjee, Chairman & Managing Director, BEML.
Bahrain Metro
DMRC will construct four metro lines for Bahrain Metro in two phases as part of the project. There are also plans for two interchanges at the Bab al Bahrain and al Farooq metro junctions.
The first metro route will run from Bahrain International Airport to Seef Mall, according to the DMRC. It will run alongside the King Faisal Highway and Airport Road. It will have nine stops and be 13 km long.
Juffair to Issa town will be served by the second metro route. It will have 11 stops and a length of 15.6 km. It will link several areas, including Salmaniya, Zinj, and Tubli.
Delhi Metro - International Projects
The Delhi Metro is actively seeking international projects for the construction and operation of metros around the globe.
Earlier, the Delhi Metro qualified in the pre-bid process for the Tel Aviv Metro Project in Israel.
In addition, the DMRC is currently bidding on foreign metro projects in Alexandria, Egypt, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and Mauritius. The DMRC is presently working as a consultant on the Dhaka Metro project in Bangladesh.
