The Election Commission of India has announced that 56 Rajya Sabha seats across 15 states will go to polls on 27 February, with the term of office for 50 members concluding on 2 April, as per a report by the Hindustan Times.

States include Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, and others.

In July, four nominated members affiliated with the BJP, namely Mahesh Jethmalani, Sonal Mansingh, Ram Shakal and Rakesh Sinha will retire.

Additionally, among those retiring in April are nine Union ministers, Dharmendra Pradhan, Ashwini Vaishnaw, Bhupendra Yadav, Mansukh Mandaviya, Narayan Rane, Parshottam Rupala, Rajeev Chandrasekhar and V Muraleedharan.

BJP president JP Nadda, and former prime minister Manmohan Singh, are also set to retire in April.

The schedule includes notifications on 8 February, nominations by February 15, scrutiny on 16 February, withdrawal by 20 February, and polling on 27 February.

The voting process involves proportional representation through a single transferable vote.

Notably, one-third of Rajya Sabha members retire every two years, ensuring continuity in the house.
