In a significant development, the Bombay High Court has granted bail to Gautam Navlakha in the Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case.
The division bench, headed by Justice A S Gadkari, accepted Navlakha's plea for bail, marking a crucial legal turn in the prolonged case.
Navlakha, who was arrested in August 2018, had been placed under house arrest in November last year following a Supreme Court order.
However, as reported by Livemint, National Investigation Agency sought the court to stay the operation of the bail order for six weeks, intending to file an appeal in the Supreme Court.
In response, the bench granted a stay for three weeks, allowing time for potential legal proceedings.
Gautam Navlakha, the seventh accused in the case to be granted bail, secured his release on a surety of Rs 1 lakh.
The court's decision follows the release of known Maoists Vernon Gonsalves and Arun Ferreira in August this year.
The Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case, which unfolded during 2017-18, had earlier led to the arrests of several alleged 'activists', including Varavara Rao, Sudha Bhardwaj, Anand Teltumbe, Stan Swamy, and others.
The Bombay High Court's decision in Navlakha's case adds a new dimension to the legal proceedings, highlighting the ongoing complexities and legal scrutiny surrounding the Elgar Parishad case.
