In a concerning incident at the Lok Sabha, two individuals managed to breach security measures, jumping into the chamber from the visitors' gallery and releasing smoke canisters.
This incident has prompted an examination of the factors contributing to the security lapse in one of the nation's crucial institutions.
The Key factors include:-
1. The new Parliament building's design includes a lower height for the visitors' gallery compared to the previous structure. This architectural change facilitated the intruders' ability to jump into the chamber, highlighting a potential vulnerability.
2. The inauguration of the new Parliament building attracted a surge in visitors. However, a shortage of security staff was reported, impacting the ability to manage the growing crowds and maintain stringent security checks.
3. The breach also revealed that routine security checks typically do not include inspecting footwear. The intruders took advantage of this gap by concealing color smoke canisters in their shoes, avoiding detection.
There are also allegations suggesting that the intruders may have received support from a Member of Parliament, facilitating their passage through security layers.
In response to the breach, certain measures to enhance security are being considered:
1. Entry for visitors into the Lok Sabha has been temporarily suspended to reassess and strengthen security measures.
2. Discussions are also ongoing about installing glass in front of the visitors' galleries to prevent unauthorised access.
However, the incident has raised important questions about the efficacy of current security protocols and emphasises the need for improvements to ensure the sanctity and security of India's parliamentary proceedings.
