The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has accused Kolkata’s Tala police station of creating false records in the rape and murder case of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The CBI sought the extension of custody of former RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh and former officer in charge of Tala police station (PS) Abhijit Mondol, who were arrested on 14 September.

The central investigative agency claimed to have found new/additional facts during the custodial interrogation of both the accused persons, "to the effect that some false records were created/altered in PS Tala."

Both of them were sent to judicial remand till 30 September. They have been accused of disturbing the crime scene, misleading investigators and trying to hide evidence.

In its submission to the Sealdah court, the CBI stated that it needs to further interrogate both Sandip Ghosh and Abhijit Mondol while in custody, following the extraction of data from the DVR (digital video recorder) and hard disk containing the CCTV footage from PS Tala.

These items have been sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory in Kolkata. During the next round of questioning, investigators plan to confront both individuals with the call records.

The CBI has asserted that Ghosh and Mondol were in constant communication by phone after the body of the junior doctor was found in a seminar hall at R G Kar on 9 August.

The agency is also exploring allegations of a larger conspiracy related to the rape and murder case, including claims of deliberate evidence tampering, Indian Express reported.

Concerns have been raised by the victim's family and protesting doctors about the delays in filing an FIR, the seemingly expedited cremation of the body, and the presence of outsiders and doctors associated with Ghosh at the crime scene.
