After a later night meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday (26 August), Assam Chief Minister (CM) Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed that Champai Soren will join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Notably, the former Jharkhand CM Soren, earlier, said that he has three options of retiring from politics or forming a party of his own or joining an existing party after leaving Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).
However, a few days after this, he had also expressed his inclination to form a new party of his own but clarified that everything would be final within a week.
Now, within a week, Sarma has said, "Former CM of Jharkhand and a distinguished Adivasi leader of our country, Champai Soren ji met Hon’ble Union Home Minister Amit Shah ji a short while ago."
Sarma further informed on X that Soren will officially join the BJP on 30 August in Ranchi. The news was shared with an image of Soren, Sarma and Shah sitting together.
Sarma is the BJP's co-in-charge for the Jharkhand assembly elections which is due later this year. Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan is the BJP in charge.
Soren had claimed that he felt humiliated when Hemant Soren, upon his release from jail in a land scam case, asked Champai to step down from the CM chair.
While Hemant took over as CM again, Champai started showing signs of rebellion. Champai took oath as the CM in February when Hemant was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
