Grim Flood Situation In Assam: Death Toll Rises To 37, Nearly 4 Lakh Affected As Major Rivers Overflow

More than 3.90 lakh people in Assam are grappling with severe flooding as the overall situation remains dire, officials said on Saturday.

Despite a slight improvement in the flood situation due to receding rainfall, 19 districts are still affected.

The death toll from this year's floods, landslides, and storms has reached 37, with one person reported missing, according to officials cited in a PTI report.

As of Friday (21 June) evening, a total of 3,90,491 people remained impacted across the districts of Kamrup, Tamulpur, Hailakandi, Udalguri, Hojai, Dhubri, Barpeta, Biswanath, Nalbari, Bongaigaon, Baksa, Karimganj, South Salmara, Goalpara, Darrang, Bajali, Nagaon, Cachar, and Kamrup Metropolitan.

This is a slight decrease from the 4.09 lakh affected on Thursday, although the number of flood-hit districts remains unchanged.

Karimganj has been the hardest hit, with over 2.40 lakh residents affected.

Major rivers including the Kopili at Kampur and Dharamtul, Barak at BP Ghat, and Kushiyara in Karimganj continue to flow above danger levels.

In response, more than 100 relief camps have been established, sheltering over 15,000 people.

An additional 125 relief distribution centres are also operational, providing essential supplies to those in need.

Infrastructure across various districts has suffered significant damage, with houses, cattle sheds, roads, bridges, and embankments all affected, officials added.
