Amidst mounting pressure, AAP MLA Chaitar Vasava surrendered to the police in Dediapada town, Gujarat, over a month after a case was filed against him for allegedly threatening forest department personnel and firing a round in the air.
As reported by Deccan Herald, Vasava, accompanied by hundreds of supporters, surrendered at the Dediapada police station following a procession from his party office.
The legislator, who represents the Dediapada (ST) assembly constituency, faces charges under IPC sections related to rioting, extortion, and attack on government officials, along with provisions of the Arms Act.
The case stems from a clash between Vasava and forest department personnel on 30 October.
The dispute arose when officials raised objections to the use of forest land for farming by private parties.
Subsequently, during a discussion at his residence, Vasava and other accused allegedly threatened the officials, with Vasava reportedly firing a round in the air.
Vasava's wife, personal assistant, and a farmer were already arrested last month, and three other accused, who had been on the run, surrendered with Vasava.
The AAP MLA, known for his tribal leadership, represents the AAP's legislature party in Gujarat and serves as the working president of its central zone.
He is also one of the five AAP MLAs elected in the 2022 Gujarat assembly elections.
The surrendered accused will be produced before a court, as investigations continue into the forest department confrontation and the alleged conspiracy behind the charges against Vasava.
