Earlier today, Union Home Minister Amit Shah convened a high level meeting to discuss the law and order situation in New Delhi. The second review meeting came after Shah took stock of the situation on Monday night in the wake of violence rocking parts of North East Delhi.
The second review meeting which happened on Tuesday, saw Shah meeting Delhi's Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, Commissioner of Police Amulya Patnaik, among others.
According to Kejriwal, his meeting with Shah was positive, and it was decided that political parties will ensure that peace returns to Delhi.
Kejriwal said: “Meeting with HM Amit Shah was positive and it was decided that all parties will take steps to restore peace.” He added that the police are doing their bit ‘and HM has assured that whatever force is needed, will be provided,’ according to a report in the Economic Times.
On Monday night, Shah, who had landed in Delhi from Gujarat after a hectic day at the ‘Namaste Trump’ event, met Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla, Director of Intelligence Bureau Arvind Kumar, Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik, and other officials as per reports.
In the review meeting held on Monday, Shah is reported to have directed officials to ‘restore normalcy at the earliest.
On Tuesday, as per a report on the NDTV website, Kejriwal, had said:
The police personnel could not do anything because they were not getting orders from their seniors. I will raise this with (Home Minister) Amit Shah ji. They can’t decide whether there should be tear-gassing or lathi-charging without orders from above.
According to reports, seven people, including a Delhi police head constable, have lost their lives. At least 50 others are said to be injured. Among them are ‘several paramilitary and Delhi Police personnel’.
According to this report, commenting on whether an adequate number of police personnel will be given (by the Centre), Kejriwal said: “If it is needed then I hope...But right now the action is being taken by police...We've been assured that adequate number of police personnel will be deployed as required.”
Kejriwal called a meeting of leaders from his party and other parties from areas hit by the violence. He said he was told that outsiders were ‘coming and trying to make the situation worse.’ He added that the borders of Delhi needed to be ‘sealed for some time.’
