West Tripura District Magistrate Shailesh Kumar Yadav has come under heavy criticism for abusing and thrashing wedding attendees, while also threatening the hosts with arrest.
The District Magistrate conducted the raid alleging a violation of the Covid-19 night curfew enforced in the state. Following the incident, the bride's brother posted documents on Facebook to claim that they had the required permission for the wedding which was purportedly given by the DM himself.
Videos of the incident have gone viral on social media, which were also shared by IAS officers who condemned their fellow officer's behaviour.

In the video, the DM can be seen thrashing a man who looked like a priest, while using extremely rough language against the guests. He can also be seen pushing the groom, by holding him by the neck and forcing guests to get up mid-meal.
"Arrest these guys, you people have wilfully violated government order, Isko arrest karo aur jail mein daalo (arrest him and put him in jail)", the DM said.

The DM also accused police officials of being hand in gloves with the wedding hosts.
"I am bloody your district magistrate...tum log saale, bloody you are all hand in gloves with these people, count and tell me this is my command as a district magistrate", he said.

When the Bride's brother appeared to try and calmly talk with the DM, the latter flew into a rage and threw phrases like "don't talk like a villager, uneducated person", "you should be arrested first of all, he is obstructing district magistrate of India, arrest him".
The Bride's brother subsequently took to Facebook to release documents to claim that his family had made an application to the DM for conducting the wedding at night - owing to the auspicious muhurat, and a permission was also granted.
"As per Hindu religious timings, the auspicious time for marriage (logno) was 11.30 pm. Which we already mentioned in our documents submitted at DM office with the wedding card attached (pic 1). As a result of which Dr. Shailesh kr. Yadav ji, IAS, granted us permission to conduct the ceremony (pic 2)", the brother writes.
"When you issued all those orders then why did you tore those papers infront of all? If it was not allowed then why you issued the order to conduct the ceremony? Is it illegal to follow hindu marriage act in my state? Should we not follow the auspicious time (logno)?", he adds.
The DM has now apologised for his actions, while claiming that he did so for the "larger interest of the society and the people".
"If anyone got hurt due to my action, I am apologising for that. I have done this for the larger interest of the society and the people. I have taken the strict action to give a message to the people to maintain the government SOP," the DM said.
As many as 31 people were detained from the wedding, they were subsequently released.
