The Secunderabad Railway Station of South Central Railways (SCR) will undergo redevelopment with state-of-the-art amenities and superior infrastructure at Rs 699 crore.
Secunderabad is a major intercity junction railway station and a commuter rail hub in the Hyderabad urban area. It also serves as the hub of SCR.
In October 2022, the zonal railways granted the engineering, procurement and construction model (EPC) contract to M/s Girdharilal Construction Private Limited.
This project's redevelopment is expected to be finished in a 36-month period, ie by October 2025.
The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi has been recruited as the proof consultant to analyse the building's impending structure design.
The geotechnical research and topographic survey of the location are now complete.
Secunderabad station is the only one in the SCR zone that is classified as an NSG1 station (non-suburban grade 1). NSG1 stations earn Rs 500 crore per year and serve 20 million passengers.
Arun Kumar Jain, general manager (in-charge) has stated in this regard that the upgradation of Secunderabad Railway Station is much needed to meet future requirements and the zone is committed to the upgradation of important pailway stations on a priority basis to suit the requirements of all segments of people, reports Mint.
Jain also directed the officials to provide full cooperation to the executing authority so that the entire process could be completed within the time frame specified.
The main objective of the station upgrade is to revitalise and rehabilitate the city's central business district with multi-modal integration.
Secunderabad Railway Station Redevelopment Plan
Under the redevelopment plan of Secunderabad Railway Station, a new three-storey station building encompassing 22,516 square metres will be constructed on the north side. The existing south-side building will be extended and developed with G+3 floors — 14,792 sq/mts.
The project also involves building a 108-metre-wide, two-storey sky concourse with the first level for passengers and a rooftop plaza on the second level for the general public.
A five-level parking structure has been planned for the station's northern side.
On the south side of the station, a unique subterranean parking lot will also be built. There will be designated entry and exit lanes (drop off and pick up zones). This will guarantee that the vehicles can be moved easily by the departing guests.
A 5,000 kV solar power plant will also be set up.
South Central Railway has taken up the redevelopment of the three main stations in the division — Tirupati, Nellore and Secunderabad.
