Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh said that the first phase of deportation of illegal immigrants from Myanmar was completed today (2 May) through the border town of Moreh.
"Without any discrimination, we have completed the first phase of deportation of illegal immigrants from Myanmar with 38 more immigrants leaving Manipur," Singh posted on X.
"A total of 77 illegal immigrants have been deported in the first phase. One Indian national was also brought back from Myanmar during the handover ceremony," the Manipur CM added.
"The State Government is continuing the identification of illegal immigrants and at the same time biometric data are being recorded. Let’s keep our borders and country secure," Singh concluded.
This comes after various reports emerged suggesting that Myanmar's military junta is losing strength due to ongoing internal conflict.
Notably, India is also planning to invest approximately $3.7 billion in fencing its 1,610-km (1,000-mile) border with Myanmar over the next decade to curb smuggling and other illicit activities.
