In a recent interview with The Indian Express, former prime minister Manmohan Singh offered a glimpse into his perspective on India's future.
Singh, a participant in various G20 summits, shed light on the evolving role of foreign policy within domestic politics. He underscored India's significant role in navigating the turbulent waters of the current global landscape, especially in light of recent international conflicts.
Here are the key highlights of his insights on India's economic challenges, its scientific achievements, and its path forward as it marks 75 years of Independence:
1. India's Position In The Shifting Global Order
According to Manmohan Singh, the global landscape has undergone significant changes, notably with the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the geopolitical tensions between Western countries and China.
India as an economically and democratically thriving nation has garnered substantial global respect and stands poised to influence the emerging dynamics In this transformed world order.
2. Reflecting On G20's Transformation And India's Economic Landscape
Singh noted that India's foreign trade, as a part of its economy, doubled between 2005 and 2015, greatly benefiting us by reducing poverty for millions. This also means that India is more connected to the world economy.
Back in the 2008 financial crisis, the G20 did a good job coordinating policies, improving global financial safety nets, and promoting international cooperation.
Today, there's talk about countries becoming less connected (de-globalisation) and implementing new trade restrictions. While these changes could disrupt how things work now, they might also create new chances for India to be part of global supply chains.
It's important for India to avoid getting stuck in conflicts and instead maintain a balance in trade relationships with different countries and regions to safeguard its economic interests.
3. On India-China Relationship
Manmohan Singh expressed that he does not consider it his role to offer advice to Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding complex diplomatic affairs.
He said that the absence of Chinese President Xi Jinping at the G20 summit is unfortunate. Singh expressed his optimism and trust that the Prime Minister will take the required measures to safeguard India's territorial and sovereign integrity while also seeking to ease tensions in the bilateral relationship.

He expressed great excitement over Chandrayaan-3's remarkable feat in becoming the first mission to reach the Moon's south pole since its launch in 2008. He extended heartfelt congratulations to the dedicated individuals at the Indian Space Research Organisation, responsible for this accomplishment.
5. Assessing Challenges And Opportunities In India's Path Ahead
Singh sees India on the verge of a distinctive economic prospect, within a shifting global scenario. As a peaceful democratic nation boasting a substantial market and abundant human and natural resources, India has the potential to ascend as a global economic force in the forthcoming decades.
This can be achieved through a focus on manufacturing, production, and services.
Moreover, as the world moves towards environmentally sustainable development, India must be prepared to seize opportunities in areas like green transportation, minerals, and clean technologies, he added.
