In a significant development, On Friday (22 December) India has reported 640 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the total to 4.50 crore infections, as reported by The Times Of India.

The Union Health Ministry's data shows an increase in active cases from 2,669 to 2,997, with one new fatality in Kerala, bringing the death toll to 5,33,328.

The recovery rate remains high at 98.81 per cent , with 4,44,70,887 individuals having recovered.

However, the Centre confirmed the presence of the JN.1 subvariant in a patient from Kerala, the first such case in India.

JN.1 is closely related to the BA.2.86 variant, recently identified in the US and China.

This discovery underscores the evolving nature of the virus, prompting continued monitoring and a proactive approach in India's fight against Covid-19.

The emphasis remains on vaccination, adherence to safety protocols, and vigilance against emerging variants.
