Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced the successful test flight of the Agni 5 missile with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology.
"Proud of our DRDO scientists for Mission Divyastra, the first flight test of indigenously developed Agni-5 missile with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology," the Prime Minister has said in a tweet.
According to experts, MIRV technology enables a single missile to carry multiple warheads, each capable of striking different targets with precision, vastly increasing its destructive potential and strategic flexibility.
The Agni-V missile has been developed to enable India to strike targets deep within the Chinese mainland.
With the test of Mission Divyastra, India has joined the select group of nations that have MIRV capability.
This system is equipped with indigenous Avionics systems and high-accuracy sensor packages, which ensure that the re-entry vehicles reach the target points within the desired accuracy.
Agni-V is a land based nuclear capable intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and has a range of over 5,000 km.
