The Karnataka Cabinet on Friday (26 July) approved the proposal to rename Ramanagara district as Bengaluru South.

"We have decided to rename Ramanagara district as Bengaluru South…It is based on the demand of the people there. The Revenue Department will start the process,” state Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H K Patil said, news agency PTI reported.

"Keeping the brand Bengaluru in mind, the cabinet has accepted the proposal submitted by the legislators of Ramanagara," he said, Deccan Herald reported.

However, the minister clarified that aside from the name change, all other aspects of the district will remain unchanged.

The renaming decision was taken during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

Earlier in the month, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar led a delegation to submit a proposal for the renaming Ramanagara district to Bengaluru South to the Chief Minister.

Ramanagara district comprises five taluks: Ramanagara, Channapatna, Magadi, Kanakapura, and Harohalli.

Renaming Ramanagara as Bengaluru South district will help the talukas benefit from the international reputation enjoyed by Bengaluru, Shivakumar said in the memorandum.
