Landslides Kill At Least 15 People In Northeast After Cyclone Remal, Road Connectivity Disrupted In Assam

As an after-effect of Cyclone Remal in Bay of Bengal, multiple landslides happened across Manipur, Mizoram, Assam and Meghalaya killing at least 15 people, as per Indian Express.

11 died in a stone quarry collapse in Mizoram's capital Aizawl on Tuesday (28 May). Their dead bodies were recovered as per Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma.

Three more bodies have been recovered from two other landslide sites. Rs 15 crore has been sanctioned for relief work and assistance will be given to the relatives of the deceased.

"The storm is subsiding now but the signal is very poor in many parts of the state, which is why it has been difficult to gather information and respond,” Lalduhoma said.

Closure of all schools, banks, financial institutions, public sector undertakings and government offices has been ordered with exemptions given to essential services.

Private sector offices are advised to implement the ‘work from home’ model as far as possible as road connectivity and power supply have also disrupted in Lower Assam, including Guwahati.

A portion of the road between Assam’s Haflong and Silchar was washed away disrupting the road connectivity. Cyclone-induced storms have also injured many.
