In Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri district on Sunday, violence broke out between a group of farm bill protesters and members of a convoy linked to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that was passing by the protest site.
Eight people have died in the violence, including from both sides.
Violence broke out after a car from the convoy allegedly hit the protesters, mowing down four of them. Protesters then allegedly pulled out people from the vehicle and lynched them to death.
The convoy belonged to Union Minister of State for Home, Ajay Kumar Mishra. The convoy was on its way to attend a separate event in Lakhimpur where Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya was scheduled to be present.
Here is the list of the eight deceased persons, as gathered from various news reports.
1. Daljeet Singh
The 25-year-old was a resident of Nanpara area of Bahraich district. He is said to be the first to be hit by the convoy vehicle. He is survived by his wife, a daughter and a son.
2. Gurvinder Singh
The 18-year-old was also a resident of Nanpara area of Bahraich. He was part of the protest and was tasked with distributing water and food to the crowd. Like Daljeet, he was allegedly run over by the vehicle.
3. Nachhatar Singh
The 52-year-old was a resident of Lakhimpur. His youngest son is in Shashastra Seema Bal Jawan. He was allegedly run over by the vehicle.
4. Lovepreet Singh
The 18-year-old was a college student. He was allegedly run over by the vehicle.
5. Shyam Sundar
The 35-year-old hailed from Singha Kalan in Lakhimpur. He was a BJP worker and party president of Bhedaura. He was allegedly pulled out of the vehicle and beaten to death by farm bill protesters.
6. Shubham Mishra
The 30-year-old was a resident of Shivpuri locality in Lakhimpur Kheri town. He was a BJP worker and booth president. He was allegedly pulled out of the vehicle and beaten to death by farm bill protesters.
7. Hariom Mishra
The 35-year-old was a resident of Parsehra Khurd village in Lakhimpur. He was a driver of Ajay Kumar Mishra. He was allegedly pulled out of the vehicle and beaten to death by farm bill protesters.
8. Raman Kashyap
The 28-year-old was a resident of Lakhimpur. He was a local journalist who contributed to several media houses. It’s not known yet if he died after getting run over by the convoy vehicle or lynched by protesters.
