In a significant milestone for the development of North East, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh laid the foundation stone for the Rs 1,766 crore Imphal Ring Road Project on Monday (29 January).
Soon after launching the project, CM Singh said, “Today’s launching program is a very important project, but it could not be expedited last 10-15 years, but with the intervention of PM Modi, it was expedited in 2020."
He added, "The cost of this project will be approximately Rs 1,750 crore and today we are launching because work order has been given to the company and we are targetting to complete the project by 2026 December.”
Initiated in 2015-16 and approved in 2020, the 51.23 km long project aims to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce pollution in Imphal West district.
A notable feature of the project is the incorporation of a noise pollution control mechanism.
As reported by Economic Times, State Works Minister Govindas Konthoujam highlighted that 9.5 km of the road would be four-lane, with an additional 41.5 km as two-lane with paved shoulders.
The road will also include an 18 km greenfield stretch featuring solar lamps, footpaths, and cycle lanes.
Along the four-lane segment, amenities like food plazas will be established, including provisions for cycle and jogging lanes within a 1 km stretch.
Addressing the ceremony, Singh acknowledged the challenging phase Manipur is undergoing and emphasised the importance of unity.
He assured protection against vested interest groups seeking to disrupt the state's unity and called for the public's support.
Singh also outlined the state government's commitment to numerous developmental projects, improving living standards and welfare at the grassroots level.
