Just days after a minor school-going girl, belonging to the Hindu community, was charred to death by her stalker Shahrukh Hussain, a similar incident has come to light from the same area — Dumka district of Jharkhand.
As per various reports, body of a minor girl, belonging to the tribal community, was found hanging from a tree on Friday morning (2 September).
An India Today report quoted Deputy Inspector General of Police Sudarshan Mandal as saying the girl was raped and murdered. He said a man named Arman Ansari had been arrested.
The report further said that as per her family, the girl lived with her aunt in Dumka, where she came in contact with Ansari.
A Hindustan Times report quoted a senior police officer as saying that Ansari works as a construction labourer.
He said that Ansari has been booked under IPC sections 376 (rape), 302 (murder) and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren tweeted about the case on 3 September, without revealing names of the victim and perpetrator.
He tweeted, “I am deeply saddened by the incident in Dumka. In the said case, the accused has been arrested and I have directed Dumka Police to take strict legal steps to ensure justice. May God give peace to the departed daughter and give strength to the bereaved family to bear this critical time.”
However, Soren kicked up a controversy by an insensitive statement he made on Sunday trivialising the heinous crime.
“Incidents happen. Where do they not occur?" he said, as reported by The Times of India.
Swarajya has reported many cases from India where Hindu women have been targetted by Muslim men for relationships for their religious conversion or sexual exploitation.
This follows a worldwide pattern of such men preying on non-Muslim women as alleged by Hindu, Christian and Sikh communities in Pakistan and Bangladesh, and Sikh and Christian groups in the UK, among others.
Here is a list of some cases where Hindu women have been targetted for conversion or killed for refusing conversion-nikah, as reported by Swarajya from some northern states of India:
