Modi Government's Strategy For 10,000 Km Of Highways: DPR Preparation During Model Code Of Conduct, Approval After Elections

During the upcoming general elections, the Union government intends to capitalise on the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) period to finalise detailed project reports (DPRs) for approximately 10,000 kilometres of highways.

This strategy aims to accelerate the process of awarding contracts and commencing construction immediately after the new government assumes office, according to a report from Livemint.

The Model Code of Conduct becomes effective as soon as elections are announced and remains in force until the completion of the elections.

This period restricts government officials from announcing any new projects to ensure a fair electoral environment.

However, completing project feasibility reports is not covered by the code, according to two sources familiar with the matter.

Once these reports are ready, it is expected to streamline the rollout of new highways, with the DPRs set to be finalised in the next three months using the PM Gati Shakti platform.

This initiative aims to expedite the awarding of projects worth over Rs 2 lakh crore that have already been sanctioned.
