  • The long-awaited initiative to extend Mumbai Metro service along the Metro 12 corridor (Kalyan–Taloja) is now moving forward.

There will be 18 stops along the 20.75-kilometre corridor. Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has issued tenders for nine stations, and the process for other stations will begin shortly. This phase of the contract will cost Rs 780 crore.

The line-12 is an extension of the metro-5 (Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan metro) and this will offer hassle-free commute options to and from the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, reports Times Of India.

All stations on this route will be elevated. Services on this line will start with three-car coaches and will eventually expand to six-car trains. This route will have 15 rakes, as per DPR.

Thousands of residents from Kalyan-Dombivli, Ulhasnagar, Ambernath, Badlapur Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Panvel will benefit from the line once it is operational.

The under-construction Navi Mumbai international airport will become operational in 2024 according to Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
