  • An FIR has been registered against the man, identified as Mohammed Iqbal.
  • A video of a man cracking a sexual joke on revered Hindu deities recently went viral on social media.

It has now emerged that the video was shot on a mobile phone in Naswari area of Gobindgarh village in Rajasthan’s Alwar district. The man has been identified as Mohammed Iqbal, son of Ayyab, a resident of Naswari.

On the complaint of a local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, Hari Singh Solanki, a first information report (FIR) was filed at Gobindgarh police station on 25 March, 2021 (FIR number 84). Iqbal has been booked under section 153A (promoting enmity between groups) and 66D (cyber crime).

A cop at the police station told this correspondent over the phone that Iqbal is absconding. The police have however identified one of the men in the group that was listening to and laughing at the joke, and are questioning him, the cop said.

In the FIR, complainant Solanki has said that he received a video on his phone through Whatsapp on the morning of 25 March. The video showed seven men sitting in a group, listening to a man named Iqbal who was cracking an obscene joke on Ram, Sita and Lakshman. The statement says that Iqbal is known to the complainant.

Solanki told this correspondent over the phone that Iqbal is a “serial culprit”. “He is routinely found to be making obscene jokes on Hindu figures and deities. We had the video evidence this time, so we took it up with the police,” he said.

Iqbal belongs to Meo jaati, almost all members of which have converted to Islam. The Mewat belt, which extends from Nuh district in Haryana to Bharatpur district in Rajasthan crossing Alwar, gets its name from the dominant Meo community.

Notably, the Alwar district of Rajasthan is routinely maligned by mainstream media and political parties as a den of ‘violent Hindu nationalists who kill Muslims in the name of cow and Hindu faith'.

Most of the incidents that the media used for maligning Alwar were related to so-called cow vigilantism that took place in Ramgarh tehsil of Alwar.

Ramgarh lies on the border of Rajasthan and shares its boundary with Nuh. That the Mewat belt is notorious even in police and court records as a den for “organised” and “deadly” cattle-smuggling mafia was not revealed in most media reports.

Of the three Muslim men killed by vigilantes in most infamous cases reported from Ramgarh in 2017 and 2018, two had a prior history of cattle theft and slaughter. They were Umer Mohammad, a resident of adjoining Bharatpur district and Rakbar Khan, a resident of Nuh district.

The third, Pehlu Khan, also a resident of Nuh district, was posthumously charged for cattle-theft too, but the Rajasthan High Court dismissed the FIR against him for want of “evidence”.

The dropping of the charge was hardly surprising, given that convictions are abysmally low in cattle-theft and slaughter cases.

In Govindgarh, as many as 221 cow hides were recovered from a house in a police raid. A team of doctors concluded that the cow hides looked not more than a month old.

As cow slaughter is prohibited in the state for several decades now, the brazenness of the slaughterers shocked the Hindu residents, who alleged that the police took bribes and made a weak case against the accused, who got bail within a week.

To keep the propaganda of Hindu-nationalists-targetting- Muslims alive, the mainstream media routinely ignores the crimes perpetrated by members of the Muslim community on Hindus in Alwar.

This correspondent reported last year that a minor Hindu girl, allegedly fed up of stalking and molestation by some neighbouring Muslim men, tried to commit suicide by jumping into a well. While she was rescued, her father hanged himself to death a few days later. The family accused the Muslim men of murder.

The case was ignored by the narrative-setting national English media.

It took place in an area In Ramgarh tehsil called Balot Nagar, which has around 80 per cent of its population as Muslims. Residents told this correspondent that MLA from Ramgarh Assembly constituency, Shafia Khan of the Congress Party, did not bother to meet the family.

The latest case of Iqbal publicly cracking jokes on Hindu deities is yet another reality check of the propaganda crafted around Alwar.

Is Alwar’s Muslim community really victimised by Hindus and living in fear as claimed?
