Ajit Pawar's wife Sunetra Pawar might contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra's Baramati against Sharad Pawar's daughter Supriya Sule, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president indicated.
While Ajit Pawar didn't take any names, he made an emotional appeal to the voters to elect a "first-timer", who is surrounded by "experienced people" while addressing a public rally in Baramati on Friday (16 February).
Notably, Sunetra Pawar has never contested any elections but remains publicly active in the constituency with her social work. She comes from a political family as her brother Padamsinh Patil is a senior politician and former minister.
Supriya Sule is a sitting MP from Baramati and has been representing the constituency since 2009. Her father Sharad Pawar represented Baramati five times in Lok Sabha. Ajit Pawar too won once here in 1991.
However, the NCP underwent a split last year when over 40 MLAs led by Ajit Pawar joined the ruling coalition in Maharashtra. Recently, the Election Commission and Assembly Speaker recognised this faction as 'real NCP'.
Sharad Pawar moved Supreme Court against this decision and requested for an urgent hearing of the matter as the Maharashtra Assembly session is set to start next week.
